Right to Repair: What Does It Mean for Power Stations?

The right to repair, internationally known as Right to Repair, received a new European framework with EU Directive 2024/1799. EU member states had to transpose and apply the directive by 31 July 2026. The rules make repair more accessible for designated product groups, also when a commercial warranty has expired.

Power stations do not automatically fall under that European repair obligation at the moment. Yet the directive is relevant if you want to buy a power station. The construction, parts availability and access to repair information partly determine whether you can have the device maintained later.

Short answer

The right to repair obliges manufacturers to repair designated products also outside the legal warranty, free of charge or at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time. The obligation only applies to product groups with European repairability requirements. Power stations do not automatically fall under it at the moment.

What does the right to repair change under EU Directive 2024/1799?

EU Directive 2024/1799 must make repairing more attractive and more accessible. The rules connect to European ecodesign legislation and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. This legislation can set requirements per product group for disassembly, repair information and the availability of parts.

For products that fall under the relevant European repairability requirements, the following principles apply among others:

  • The manufacturer must repair the product on request, unless repair is impossible.
  • The repair must be carried out free of charge or at a reasonable price.
  • The manufacturer must carry out the repair within a reasonable time.
  • Mandatory spare parts and tools must be available at a reasonable price.
  • Information about repair services and indicative prices must be clear and easily accessible.
  • Contractual provisions, hardware or software may not hinder repair without objective justification.

The directive also introduces a voluntary European repair information form. With it, consumers can compare repair offers on price, lead time and practical conditions.

Within the legal warranty, the seller remains the first point of contact for a product that does not conform to the agreement. If a consumer chooses repair in such a situation, the directive prescribes a one-time extension of the liability period by twelve months. The precise application follows from the national implementation.

Does the right to repair apply to power stations?

No, not automatically. The repair obligation is linked to product groups for which concrete repairability requirements have been established in European legislation and which are included in annex II of the directive.

Power stations are currently not a separately designated product group in that annex. You therefore cannot solely rely on Directive 2024/1799 to demand that every manufacturer repairs every power station or makes all parts available.

This does not mean repair is impossible. A manufacturer can voluntarily offer repair service, replaceable modules and spare parts. Future ecodesign rules can also expand the scope. The European Commission must adapt the list when new product groups receive statutory repairability requirements.

For buyers the distinction remains important:

  • A statutory repair obligation concerns rights that follow from legislation.
  • Physical repairability concerns the design of the device.
  • Repair service concerns what the manufacturer or seller actually offers.

A power station can therefore be well repairable without a specific statutory repair obligation already applying to that product group.

What is the status of the right to repair in the Netherlands?

The European transposition date was 31 July 2026. The Netherlands submitted the Implementation Act for the repair directive to the House of Representatives on 13 July 2026. On the reference date of this article, 11 September 2026, that bill is still under consideration.

It is therefore too strong to say that all new repair rules already fully apply in the Netherlands. The eventual Dutch effect depends on the parliamentary treatment and the entry into force of the implementation act.

The National Repair Register does already exist. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Techniek Nederland launched this register on 20 March 2025. Consumers can find affiliated repair companies there.

Legal warranty versus factory warranty

In the Netherlands the legal warranty has no fixed standard term. You may expect a product to last a reasonable time with normal use. A factory warranty of for example one year is a supplement and does not limit your statutory rights.

What is a repairability index?

A repairability index is a score that shows how easily a product can be repaired.

Such an index typically looks at:

  • Availability of technical documentation
  • Ease of disassembly
  • Required tools and fastenings used
  • Availability and delivery time of spare parts
  • Ratio between the parts price and the price of a new product
  • Product-specific repair criteria

France has used an official indice de réparabilité with a score from 0 to 10 since 2021. In 2025 this score was replaced for televisions and washing machines by a broader durability index, which also weighs reliability.

Belgium has required a repairability index for new dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, pressure washers and laptops without touchscreen since 2 May 2025.

There is currently no mandatory, generally applicable repairability index for power stations. A manufacturer may therefore not give the impression that a power station has an official repair score without a substantiated calculation.

How to recognise a repairable power station

Anyone looking for a repairable power station must look beyond capacity, power output and a general mention of customer service.

Check the following points before purchase:

  • Can the housing be opened without permanent damage?
  • Is the housing screwed rather than fully glued?
  • Can the battery, connections, inverter and controls be replaced separately?
  • Does the manufacturer publish information about maintenance and repair?
  • Are spare parts actually obtainable?
  • Does the manufacturer state how long parts remain available?
  • Are indicative prices for parts or repairs known?
  • Is it clear who can carry out the repair?
  • Can a repairer disassemble the device with common tools?
  • Does the manufacturer give safety instructions for work on the battery and 230V components?

A screwed housing is a favourable sign, but is in itself no proof of full repairability. The accessibility of components, documentation, parts availability and support also count.

Can you safely repair a power station?

That depends on the defect, the construction and your technical knowledge. A loose connection or replaceable external module is something different from work on battery cells, an inverter or a 230V circuit.

Safety first

A power station can contain high currents and dangerous voltages internally, even when the device is not connected to the socket. Only open the device if the manufacturer allows this and gives clear instructions for it.

Have work on the battery, charging electronics and 230V components carried out by a professional repairer. Repairability means that parts are accessible and replaceable. It does not automatically mean that every repair is suitable for doing yourself.

The right to repair makes repair a normal part of ownership for more and more products. For power stations the European repair obligation does not yet apply automatically. It therefore remains important to check before purchase how the device is built and which support is available.

Pay attention to disassembly, a replaceable battery, separately replaceable parts, parts availability and accessible repair information. That way you choose a power station that is not only usable today, but can also be maintained later.
