Start with your own device. Consumption differs per CPAP, per setting and per use of a heated humidifier. A few checks in advance give peace of mind.

Why CPAP backup power deserves extra attention

Most people can miss one or a few nights without CPAP, but sleeping without treatment can cause complaints. What is medically responsible differs per person. Therefore always discuss your situation with your doctor, home ventilation center or CPAP supplier. Do not change settings yourself if that affects your treatment.

The Longfonds and home ventilation centers signal that there is still no clear national advice for power-dependent patients. The government asks households through the Denk vooruit campaign to be able to manage for 72 hours. For CPAP users, a personal power plan belongs in that preparation. How much power does a CPAP use during an outage?

As a branch guideline you can assume 30 to 90 watts. Actual consumption depends on the model and the settings. Without a heated humidifier consumption is clearly lower than with heating.

Watt is the power your device asks. Watt-hour, abbreviated Wh, is the amount of energy in a battery. A CPAP that averages 40 watts uses about 240 Wh in six hours. For more explanation read what mAh and Wh mean.

Check the manual and the information on the adapter. Ask your supplier which consumption is realistic for your settings. Also consult the manual of your CPAP device and your supplier to determine whether the device may run on a power station.

A consumer power station is not a certified medical backup power provision. Always check with your CPAP supplier whether your specific model may run on a power station.

Calculating a CPAP power station with Mobisun Pro

A battery does not deliver its full stated capacity to a connected device. For this calculation example we use 85 percent efficiency.

These are calculation examples, not a guarantee for a full night. The result depends on your CPAP, settings and heated humidifier. Therefore check your own situation.

Backup power for more than just your CPAP

During a power outage you may also want to charge a phone, keep the router working or use lighting. Sometimes power is needed to keep medicines refrigerated. Check the storage instructions for that and discuss an emergency plan with your pharmacist or care provider.

The limits of a consumer power station

The 154 Wh Pro Air and 308 Wh Pro Air 2.0 may not be taken as hand luggage on a plane under the IATA rules of 2026. Both exceed the limit of 100 Wh.

If you need guaranteed or long-term power, discuss with your doctor, supplier or home ventilation center which provision fits.

Practical preparation for a CPAP power outage

  1. Write down the brand, model, power and settings of your CPAP.
  2. Ask your supplier whether your device may run on a power station and which connection is needed.
  3. Check the expected consumption with and without heated humidifier. Only adjust a treatment setting after consulting your care provider.
  4. Calculate the desired runtime in Wh and take conversion losses into account. The table uses 85 percent efficiency.
  5. Choose the battery capacity based on the hours needed. Only reserve capacity for other devices if your calculation allows it.
  6. Charge the power station and do a practical test at home in time, without endangering your treatment.
  7. Keep the contact details of your doctor, supplier or home ventilation center ready. Agree with your partner or caregiver what you will do if the outage lasts longer than the battery.
